World Food Innovation in Food Tech Startup Project by National Innovation Agency of Thailand

The National Innovation Agency or NIA has the FoodTech Incubator and Accelerator Program under the name SPACE-F to further develop and incubate food technology entrepreneurs, called FoodTech Startups. The program period is 15 months, with 3-8 months of actual implementation.  The Flying Thai Food (registered in Hong Kong) has successfully completed and received a certificate from SPACE-F. We have now found success in using boxes to extend the shelf life of pre-cut durians (peeled durians) from the original 3 days to 30 days, and will begin distributing peeled durians in over 100 convenience stores in Hong Kong during the upcoming durian season. Another 9 food business startups pushed by the National Legislative Assembly that have already been successful are

1.) GPJ Biotechnology : Glucosamine supplements that reduce wear and tear on joints and cartilage

2.)HydroZitla : A concentrated drink made from banana pulp and herbs that prevents kidney stones

3.) Nam Jai Sparkling Water : Soda made from real fruit juice

4.) Omylk (pasteurized Milk from lactose-free oats

5.) Rethink Bio : Food supplements extracted from microalgae

6.) Saxo-Siam Protein : Fish and chicken feed made from black soldier fly larvae from fermented agricultural waste

7.) Trash Lucky : An online platform where trash can be exchanged for points to win gold and the production of smart recycling bins

8.) Viramino : Plant-based protein powder to build muscle after exercise

9.) Yindii Yindii : An application that matches restaurants with consumers to book food to reduce food waste

Many of the startups that were selected for the 500 Startups Founder Academy are rapidly growing to billions or trillions of dollars in valuations. The academy is a joint venture of US companies supported by the Kobe municipal government in Japan. Just before I wrote Friday’s column, I received an email from 500 Startups Founder Academy announcing that JoyNCo had been accepted into this year’s 500 Startups Global, which allows investors from around the world to consider investing in our startups.

Joynco is a Thai company that holds a 99% stake in Beijing Joynco Retailing Technology, which owns several Thai restaurants and retail outlets in China. Almost every restaurant has a shortage of chefs and kitchen staff, so Joynco is interested in developing a robotic arm to work in the kitchen. The robotic arm we are developing can wash dishes, stir-fry rice in an industrial stir-fry machine, work in a high-heat pressure cooker, and prepare ingredients for cooking.

The global service industry market is worth 30 trillion Baht, while the global kitchen recruitment business is worth 90 billion Baht. JoyNko focuses on robotics to solve the labor recruitment and labor turnover problem in kitchens, with a target of 10% share of robotics in the global service and retail sectors. Our original base is in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, which are fruit cities. We have collaborated with many research centers to use various fruits to produce “plant-based meat” that tastes, smells, and feels like real meat, but has more protein and nutritional value. Even foie gras, or goose liver, which is a luxury food in European restaurants, today has a tendency to be able to produce foie gras from the fruit pulp of Chanthaburi and Trat, without humans having to torture and kill geese anymore.

Oil, auto, real estate and other global companies are rushing to expand into the food business, investing billions to develop innovative food and beverage products to feed the 8 billion people who are about to enter the world. In the future, agriculture will be a business of global companies. Ordinary people will have to go sell their labor in large-scale agriculture. When they receive wages, they will use them to buy food with real innovation and nutritional quality to consume. This is definitely the trend of the world.
