The forecasting center of the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce revealed that Songkran 2026 will not be as lively, with only 129 billion baht circulating in the economy, a 3.7% decrease compared to the same period last year. This is due to the impact of high fuel and commodity prices, which have dampened consumer spending. The average spending per person this year is estimated at 8,056 baht.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. Thanawat Pholvichai, President of the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the University’s Economic and Business Forecasting Center<\/b>, stated that the current overall economic situation in Thailand is affected by the conflict in the Middle East, which has led to higher global oil prices. The price of crude oil has risen to US$110 per barrel. Including transportation costs, this has resulted in domestic fuel prices reaching almost 60 baht per liter. This factor will impact the Songkran festival atmosphere this year. Furthermore, the number of tourists expected to arrive will also need to be monitored, as this will affect the overall Thai economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0“This year’s Songkran festival, people will likely slow down their spending and tighten their belts more due to high fuel and commodity prices, a consequence of the conflict in the Middle East. It will be clear that people are spending less and traveling less.”<\/b><\/p>\n

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimates that this year’s Songkran festival will be quieter than last year, with an estimated 129,649 million baht circulating in the system, a 3.7% decrease from last year. This marks the first decline in four years since the Russia-Ukraine conflict, due to rising oil prices. However, the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand during Songkran needs to be monitored, especially those from Malaysia, China, and Europe. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Ms. Umakamon Sunthornsura, Director of the Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce,<\/b> revealed consumer spending behavior during this year’s Songkran festival. She stated that 58.2% of people did not participate in water splashing, while 41.8% did. Of those participating, 56.6% focused on traveling within their own provinces, 5.5% traveled domestically, and 4.2% returned home and planned trips. International travel accounted for 0.7%. Those planning domestic travel spent an average of 8,056 baht per person, while international travel averaged 37,083 baht per person.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Regarding spending plans, the majority (42.7%) responded that they spent the same amount, 36.5% responded that they spent less (an increase from the previous year), and 20.8% responded that they spent more. Reasons for decreased spending include high fuel prices, expensive goods and services, high cost of living, the impact of the Middle East war, increased debt, and the desire to celebrate more economically. The majority (54.9%) used their salaries for spending, followed by savings, money from parents, loans, and bonuses. <\/span>Regarding the atmosphere of Songkran this year, 51.8% of people felt it was as fun as before. However, the proportion of those who thought it was more fun has increased significantly from last year, rising from 4% to 33%. 15.1% responded that it was more fun. <\/span>However, surveys indicate that Thais have concerns during the Songkran festival, with the most pressing worries being high fuel prices, increased costs of goods and services, traffic congestion, and sexual harassment.<\/span><\/p>\n
